Parenting - Reviled or Revered?
After failing to find an adequate description for what I, and many millions of parents do every day, I began to be plagued by a deeper and more pressing question. When did the role of homemaker/parent become so trivial that a dictionary is nondescript, and my government doesn’t even recognize or respect it as a legitimate profession?
Rediscovering My Feminine Power
Aggressiveness, self-sacrifice, and seduction--is this what defines feminine power? Are these examples of feminine strength that I should turn to in order to guide my daughter in developing her own feminine place in the world? It occurred to me as I looked down into her beautiful face that I was not completely sure how to encourage my newborn to embrace her feminine power until I fully defined it for myself.
Archetypes of the Masculine Divine
In contemplating this article, I began to think of all of the various faces of masculinity that have presented themselves throughout my life. I considered the many times I sat snuggled next to my bookshelf devouring myths and legends of old, or biographies of famous people of the past. I reflected on my father, three brothers, husband, and two sons.
Are You in Touch With Your Intuition?
When asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” most young children are certain of their answer. They dream of being an architect, a veterinarian, a wizard, a fireman, a musician, a fairy, an artist, or president. There are no limitations on their dreams, no societal dogmas at such an early age to steer them in the “appropriate” direction. They seem to be innately in touch with a special knowledge about themselves, their inner rhythms, dreams, and desires for their lives.
Embracing Change
What began as an attempt to get our home ready to sell has turned into a complete life-changing hunt for “clutter” and ways to organize or eliminate it permanently from my life. I thought at first that it would be easy and I would immediately feel freer and more open. I realized, though, as I sat amongst a pile of papers and memories that letting go of the old and welcoming in the new might be harder than I expected.
Find Your Passion, Enhance Your Life
"If there is no passion in your life, then have you really lived?" (T. Alan Armstrong). This is the question I have recently asked many friends who have shared their feelings of depression, dissatisfaction, and frustration with life. Two particularly close friends came to visit me one evening for an Innerspeak session. I described my belief that depression can often come when we aren't living in harmony with our soul.
Within the Silence Find Your Flow
My first conscious experience with the concept of flow was in 1998. We conceived and miscarried quite unexpectedly five months after we were married. Although the pregnancy was unplanned, I experienced tremendous heartache and loss; I had always felt that my life purpose was to be a mother and had assumed it would come as easily for me as it had for my mother and grandmother. I had never experienced a loss of that magnitude and quickly found myself in a place of extreme grief and depression.
Transform Your Life, Enrich Your Mind
"I just don't understand. I know I need to eat to stay alive, but I can't swallow anything that is solid," the frail anxious woman explained one day in my office. She has observed that, no matter how much she believed and understood that she needed to eat, she could not make effective change in her mind in order to swallow more than just liquid. Do you ever feel like this woman? Do the things you set your intention on often fail to come to fruition no matter how hard you focus on them?
